The Barefoot Nun

Inspired by ‘The Nun’s Tale’ in William Darlymple’s Nine Lives, I wrote:

Barefoot Nun
– Shana Susan Ninan

barefoot, bare-breasted, her fingers woven around the rosary beads
She walks up the granite mountain
the Bali her Focus.

Free, Serene and with a Comforting Peaceful smile on her lips
and a Prayer on her tongue
Renunciation her Aim.

consoling other monks and nuns, sacrificing her life; no, herself, too
She walks on, undeterred
Moksha her Peace.

we ask for money, pleasures, a family and a home.
She seeks Tranquility; Detachment her means
to Enlightenment.
